FAQ

What is RSS?

RSS is the acronym for Really Simple Syndication. RSS was first developed by Netscape as a method of keeping browser users up-to-date on software versions. Since then, RSS is quickly becoming the mainstream method of content distribution. RSS pushes information to the subscriber in real-time.

Does FilterMyRSS Support RSS 0.91, 0.92 and 2.0.?

Yes, FilterMyRSS supports all RSS versions. FilterMyRSS also supports XML. At this time we do not support Atom feeds.

I’m Getting Errors When Adding the Filtered Feed to my Reader.

The first thing to check is the source RSS/XML feed. Believe it or not, most feeds do not validate. Visit FeedValidator.org immediately. If the feed does not validate, this is the problem. *Many times a feed does not validate because of poor code, it’s important to notify the webmaster of that site.

My Filtered Feed Was Working, Now it Isn’t.

A good feed can go bad. Most often a feed becomes invalid because of poor code. Items as simple as empty tags or incomplete email address’ can yield a feed invalid. Since RSS / XML feeds generally push a specific number of items through their reader, the problematic code will eventually pass with new content and the filtered feed will resume working. Again, validate the feed if you feel there is an issue, than contact that webmaster with details.

Will the RSS filter work on multiple words?

Yes. If you need to filter on a group of words the FilterMyRSS utility will work. There is no need to create multiple feed filters if you need to filter on a group of words. Example: If you need to filter on “iPhone gadgets” you can enter both keywords and the resultant feed will only include feed articles with both words of “iPhone” and “gadgets.” Please note: The utility will not filter on the word combination. Meaning it will not include only articles with “iPhone gadgets” next to each other. The RSS filter will allow any article where both words appear in any part of the article.

Can I Exclude Keywords In My RSS Feed?

Yes.  FilterMyRSS allows you to filter OUT information based off keywords.  Place a negative sign “-” in front of any keyword or keyword string you’d like to exclude from your RSS reader.  Please note, the RSS exclusion feature is based off string words.  For example: “-bill gates” will exclude any articles with those two words next to each other.  However, if there is “Bill“in one portion of the article, and “Gates” in another, you will still receive the feed.

Which is Better for RSS Feeds, Firefox or IE7?

Both browsers handle feeds very well; however, with the extensive testing that FilterMyRSS went through we did conclude Microsoft IE7 is not as forgiving as Firefox. Although it is recommended to use Firefox, either browser should work without a problem. Mozilla is virtually the same as Firefox and Opera works spot-on as well.
