Punctuation Can Be a Problem

Monday, November 26th, 2007

If you are trying to filter using a keyword that carries a punctuation you might experience problems with the RSS filter of FilterMyRSS.  So for example, lets say you have an entertainment blog and want to filter celebrities who “can’t sing” then running a feed filter from FilterMyRSS might show incorrect results.

It is best to use the keyword filter “cant sing” for the filtered feed as nearly all permalinks exclude the apostrophe in the permalink structure.

How Can a RSS Filter Help a Blogger?

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Bloggers fall into two categories; a blogger who writes about their personal experiences or a blogger who writes about a niche market, understanding or expertise. However, both share similar characteristics such as “they like what they like.” For these bloggers it’s important to stay up-to-speed in their area of interest.

With RSS becoming the main stream method of information gathering it quickly becomes the main channel of information overload. This is where FilterMyRSS becomes an asset or tool for the blogger. We filter your RSS feed.

The filter service we provide sifts through the unwanted RSS material and only passes the content which is important to you. The process is simple. The RSS filter or feed filter is based off keywords. You can apply the keywords to specific areas of the source feed, such as title, description or category.

For example: let say you have a blog about Diabetes. In order to keep your reader base and blog up-to-date you subscribe to a number of medical blogs, journals, newspaper and medical website feeds. You have learned RSS feeds push the most current information right to your RSS reader. However, there is a problem as your source RSS feeds push ALL their information, yet you like updates only on articles which concern Diabetes.

It’s clear where we are going here. FilterMyRSS gives you the tools to filter all those feeds and get just the information you need. This is beneficial in several ways. First, you get the exact content you want for updates and current events. Second, (and less obvious) by stream-lining your information you become more motivated to seek new feeds to gather more information. You feel less bogged down. The tool in itself allows you to become more efficient and focused on what’s important to you.

The bottom line is this: you become more proficient in gathering information allowing your blog to be more focused. Whether you blog about personal interest or blog about specific topics adding a feed filter to your arsenal of tools can really help.   Try It !

A Google Reader Tip

Monday, October 29th, 2007

This applies to updating your Google Reader with new feeds replacing the old.

If you are using Google Reader and in the process of updating your subscriptions to include FilterMyRSS with keyword filter, be sure to only keep one window of Google Reader open.

For example, say you have one window open on GReader to copy the original RSS feed to FilterMyRSS for filtering; once the newly generated feed is made [with keyword filter] close the original Google Reader window before re-adding to your Google Reader list.

Why? This insures Google Reader updates properly with the new feed.

Monday, October 29th, 2007

With many weeks behind us in development the FilterMyRSS website is now live.

What is FilterMyRSS? It’s a simple RSS filter or feed filter to weed out the unwanted information and pass only to you what is relevant via your feed reader.

The simple utility can filter on several criteria such as feed “description,” feed “title,” or feed “category.”

In addition, FilterMyRSS gives you visibilities tools no other feed filter provides, such as viewing the feed after the filter or viewing the XML file after the filter. This allows a user to quickly identify the filter is working properly and the source feed is valid for the process. Other services give you a re-assigned feed link where by you must trust them nothing is being dropped - FilterMyRSS gives you the ability to view things live and in real-time.
